At a commemorative event for the victims of the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka, President of the UN General Assembly Maria Espinosa said, “the international community stands together in the fight against extremism and violence in all its forms,” and reaffirmed her commitment to the rule of law, to multiallelism, and to the value of peace, development and human rights for all.”
Speaking at the General Assembly hall today (03 May), Espinosa reiterated this event presented an opportunity for the international community not only to extend condolence, but also renewed its commitment to joint efforts to combat violent extremism and terrorism and offer reflections on strengthening cooperation and resolve to counter these evolving threats.
The President said, “we must work together to tackle the root causes of extremism. We must find ways not only to promote tolerance, but to foster understanding, kindness, empathy, and compassion.”
She reiterated, “no one should feel they have so little to lose or feel so alienated from political prophesies that murder holds more appeal than conversation and dialogue.”
